Hall-Fletcher 5th Graders Write Song about Constitution

Every year we work with local teacher Vince Floriani.  Vince works with his kids to write a song about whatever they are studying in school around this time of year.  This time the song was about the Constitution.  We hosted 25 kids, one of which who played drums on the track and Vince played guitar and brought in a bassist and piano player.  We look forward to these projects, as it’s always nice to revisit parts of history for those of us who have been out of school for a long, long time.  The kids are not only learning about history, they are also learning about the value of a dollar as they  raise the money for studio time themselves.  This year, they have organized a car wash to pay for their session.   We’ll post their song once it’s finished.

Remembering Our Friend, Dennis Stauffer

Sadly, we have lost our friend and colleague Dennis Stauffer.  Dennis was the mastermind behind the extremely well crafted Phattie Drums, Black Label Drums, Cocktail Drums, Steam Bent, and Sounds Like Art snare drums.  Chances are, if you’ve used our drums here at the studio, you’ve played one of his kits.  He’s made custom kits for everyone from the Avett Brothers to Eli Young Band, the Buzzcocks and more.   Dennis’ success was continuing to grow and he was looking to move into the building next to us.  His shop could no longer handle the volume of all the custom build orders he was getting.

Dennis was an amazing husband and father, and is survived by his wife Brittney and his one year old son, Roan.  We will be holding a memorial for him here at our church studio, Saturday, January 21st at 11 AM.  14 N. French Broad Avenue.  In lieu of flowers, his family is asking for donations to Roan’s education fund at Asheville Savings Bank.

His legacy will live on, as people continue to play his drums for many years to come.  He will be greatly missed in our community.

Check out Mike Rhodes playing our house kit.

Feature in Verve Magazine

Verve, a magazine that features women in Asheville,  did a feature on Crissa Requate of Mason Jar Media, Liz Whalen from the Orange Peel, and myself (studio manager of Echo Mountain).  Here we are posing pretty for the camera.  Please don’t make fun of me for standing with a microphone that is not plugged in.  The photographer wouldn’t let me attach a mic cable. Just pretend it’s a wireless U47.  Here’s a link to the article.

In The Studio with Evergreen Charter School’s Rock and Roll Club

The Rock and Roll Club from Evergreen Charter School had been working diligently to rehearse the song We Will Rock Rock You before coming into the studio.  Local musician Aaron “Woody” Wood volunteered his efforts to prepare the students for their time in the studio and offered his stellar guitar skills for the track.  The students, whose ages ranged from 11 to 13, did a fantastic job and Julian Dreyer and Aaron Wood gave the song a bit of a hip hop feel.  Here they are rehearing their foot stomps and hand claps in the API studio.

Congratulations to Steve Martin And Steep Canyon Rangers For Rare Bird Grammy Nomination!

It sure feels good when one of our clients gets nominated for a Grammy with a record that was recorded here at the studio.  Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers came in with Gary Pacsoza and Brandon Bell last August and worked in our Church studio.  Gary and Brandon were also nominated for a Grammy for engineering the Sarah Jarosz album (not done in our studio) this year.

Secret Agent 23 Skidoo was on a compilation album that was nominated in the Children’s Music Category.  Fingers crossed for all of our friends to win!

The many uses of the API Studio

Our second building, which is based around a vintage 32 ch API console is a great place to record an album.  Not only does it have world class gear but is very versatile beacause of its wide variety of size and shaped spaces.  One of these spaces is the large middle floor.  It has wood floors, an even, long but tight reverb tail, a stage, and plenty of audio lines tied directly into the patchbay in the control room downstairs.  This makes it great for big drum sounds, ensemble recording, as well as a great natural reverb chamber.  But, it has been employed as a rehearsal space, the setting for music video shoots (see “Heartattack” by Lovett http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVM57HU2PxE ), or live performances and events such as HATCH.  Because of the tie in to the control room downstairs, any live performance in this space can be recorded, even to the 2″ Studer tape machine if so desired.  The API studio is for way more than just making records.
